An ever shifting mass of drone, folk, jazzy drums and ambient noise, Ad Astra is an ominous album filled with sneaking bits of human warmth. The vocal songs stand at odds against the sometimes cold washes of instrumental interludes, but the album itself forms a surprisingly strong cohesive whole. The final song, Lauren Says, follows the Lou Reed pattern of portrait style “says” songs and finishes the album with a light poppy jaunt filled with dark lyrics of not facing facts, no way out, and the final assertion, “We’re only in it for the money.” In the get rich quick scheme of hocking tapes, indeed we are.
